MY JOURNEY WITH THE VOICE

I have developed my own voice practice through 10 years of research and teaching. I trained as an actor in London at Rose Bruford School, the world-renowned school of European Theatre Arts. There, I discovered an interest in the transformational power of voice work through my studies with voice teacher Bernadette O’Brien and my research into the connection between our voices and our bodies. This research included travel to Poland, which I visited extensively during my studies. On graduation, I moved to Wroclaw, in south-west Poland, to continue my exploration into voice work. I became a member of Theatre ZAR, who are the theatre ensemble resident at the Grotowski Institute. They continue Grotowski’s pioneering work with the resonant power of people’s voices. He collaborated with experts from across the world, and their name refers to their work with singers of zar — ancient funeral songs from the Caucasus Mountains in north-west Georgia. On my return to London, I shared my practice with colleagues and students through the work of my own performance collective. I then began collaboration with Dr Mark James Hamilton who has been a student of Dr Nadine George for the past 33 years, Nadine was a student of Roy Hart who continued the pioneering work of Alfred Wolfsohn. Nadine has taught throughout Europe during that time and has developed her own embodied voice work which allows people to find the full range of their vocal potential. Mark’s voice work integrates Nadine’s methods with his own immersion in South Indian practices.

Here are some of the places I have taught at: Rose Bruford (London), ArtsED (London), Identity School of Acting (London), Fourth Monkey (London), Brit School (London), Brixton House (London), Regents University (London) Theatre Delicatessen (London), Artworks (London), Hackney Showroom (London), Colourfest (Dorset).
